When traveling from the snow-capped glaciers in the north to the sun-drenched wine regions in the south, visitors can experience many beautiful landscapes across this large country. In general, the best time to travel to each region of the country depends greatly on your destination.
Spring in Argentina (mid-October through mid-December), as well as Autumn in Argentina (April through mid June), are considered to be the best times to visit, when there are fewer tourists and lower prices than during peak seasons.
Below is more detailed climate information based on three areas of Argentina: Northern Area, Central Area, and Southern Area.
North Argentina
Northern Argentina has three climate zones. Tropical weather prevails in the region of Iguazu Falls with its high humidity and warm temperatures, making this a good time to go regardless of what month you decide on. As you move farther west toward Salta, the dry land becomes more prominent as the average temperature for that zone is approximately 17 degrees Celsius.
If you continue to move farther west to the driest desert in the world, Atacama, then in the winter months, you may have cooler evening temperatures in the desert and colder nighttime temperatures, but the days will be warmer in the winter than they were during the day in the summer, when it could exceed 40 degrees Celsius.
Central Argentina
The average daytime temperature in Buenos Aires is about 18°C, and the three warmer months of the year are December, January, and February. If you visit Buenos Aires over the Argentine Winter (Australian Summer), don’t forget to bring your umbrella and some light outerwear for cooler nights.
For those who love their wines, Mendoza has a Mediterranean climate, so it is ideal for traveling at any time of the year. The harvest season in Mendoza occurs around February and March, so if this is the time of year that suits you best, then head on out!
South Argentina
The most favorable months for traveling in southern Argentina (Argentine Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego) are from December through March, when temperatures are about 5°C. It will be colder than that as the majority of your time will be spent outside, but the long daylight hours give you ample opportunity to visit glaciers and witness floating icebergs.
The extreme cold of July and August makes it difficult to travel during those two months. Buses run infrequently, flight cancellations occur regularly, and many tourist attractions are closed. Traveling during these months is discouraged by us. In the transitional months of September, April, and May, travelers may experience some variation in weather patterns.
